Milan leads Italy in per capita spending, with €30,993 in 2023, followed by Bolzano (€29,146) and Monza and Brianza (€26,714). At the other end of the scale, Foggia comes in last with €13,697, less than half of Milan's total. Just ahead are Caserta (€13,890) and Agrigento (€14,020). While Milan is the "capital" of household spending, accounting for 8.3% of all Italian spending in 2023, Rome leads the way in food purchases, accounting for 7.8% of overall spending in this sector. This is the conclusion of an analysis conducted by the Guglielmo Tagliacarne Study Center-Unioncamere, which presents the first estimate of household consumption in Italy at the provincial level, as well as an examination of the composition of food and non-food spending in 2023. The Northwest contributes for just under a third of national consumption, with Lombardy accounting for 20% of household spending. However, Southern Italy saw a higher increase in consumption between 2019 and 2023 than the rest of the country (15.7% versus 13.7% national average). The geography of consumer spending in Italy appears reversed even when looking only at food products, with the South topping the list and accounting for 33.2% of the total value of Italians' food shopping baskets.
