CIPESS, the Interministerial Committee for Economic Planning and Sustainable Development, has approved the final design of the Strait of Messina Bridge, marking a historic step toward the construction of the work. This was announced by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, which presented articulated technical documentation. "Today, trains take between two and three hours to cross the Strait. With the bridge, it will be reduced to 15 minutes," explained Minister Matteo Salvini, speaking of significant time savings for passengers and freight. The goal, according to engineers, is to complete the infrastructure between 2032 and 2033. Salvini stressed that it will be the longest single-span bridge in the world, surpassing those currently in Turkey, Japan and China. “It is not an end point, but a starting one,” the minister said, thanking those who believed in the project in the past, such as former minister Pietro Lunardi. “The bridge will be an accelerator of development, especially if it is connected to the High Speed Railway being planned from Salerno to Reggio Calabria”. Also present at the project's approval was Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who repeatedly reiterated the government's support for the work as a strategic infrastructure for the South.
