Since midnight on August 1, Venice has activated the ‘barcavelox’, the speed control system specifically designed for the city’s canals. The devices detected violations (an average of 150 per day, at least in the initial weeks) during the two-month testing period, but no fines were issued. However, it is now in full force, and anyone caught over the limit faces a fine. The primary function of the ‘barcavelox’ system is to regulate the speed of motorboats and boats as they navigate the canals. Speed limits are the most effective approach to prevent wave motion, which has been a long-standing issue in Venice. The waves caused by motorboats make it extremely difficult for smaller vessels to navigate, risking capsize. Furthermore, when these same waves crash into buildings and banks, they harm the foundations as well as the city's fragile architectural structure.
