It’s called ‘Chrysalis’, like the cocoon, and it’s the Italian project that won the international Hyperion competition organized by the Initiative for Interstellar Studies. The idea? A generational starship capable of transporting hundreds of people to Proxima b, the nearest potentially habitable planet, 4.25 light-years away from Earth. The 58-kilometer-long spacecraft is equipped with rotating habitats, self-sustaining ecosystems, and artificial gravity to guarantee the survival of multiple generations during a journey that will last at least 400 years. The winning team is entirely Italian, consisting of architects, engineers, scientists, and artists. The modular building, with fusion propulsion and concentric living shells, simulates gravity through rotation and includes agriculture, common areas, residential quarters, and a big panoramic dome called the Cosmo Dome. A visionary concept that, at present, is only on paper, but it is firmly grounded in interdisciplinary research and scientific principles.
