In the green embrace of the eastern hills of Friuli, Attimis, in the province of Udine, presents itself as a village with a strong and deep nature, where medieval history coexists with the landscape and memory of the 20th century. Lying on the banks of the Malina stream, this town tells its own past through its ancient stones, evocative ruins, museums, and roads that wind their way through forests, fortresses, and vineyards. The territory of Attimis was once known as the “Land of the Nine Castles”: a name that immediately evokes battles, alliances, towers and manors overlooking valleys and paths. Today, on foot, one can reach the remains of the Upper and Lower Castles of Attimis, partly reduced to ruins, but still capable of dominating the landscape with their grandeur. From here, a path of a few kilometers also allows you to touch on the fortresses of Partistagno, Zucco and Cucagna, true jewels of Friuli's medieval defensive system. Prominent among them is the 11th-century Castle of Partistagno, one of the most fascinating in Friuli. A majestic tower house, a chapel frescoed in the 14th century, a cistern and the elegant remains of the 14th-century palatium, with mullioned windows and fine architectural details, are still preserved here. Just a fifteen-minute walk leads to the remains of the Church of San Osvaldo, which also dates back to the 14th century and is surrounded by greenery and silence. Completing the historical narrative of Attimis is the Medieval Archaeological Museum, also known as the Museum of the Land of the Nine Castles. Through weapons, artifacts and objects of daily use, the museum carefully reconstructs feudal life, offering an immersive experience among medieval sculptures and material evidence of Friuli's castle civilization. Attimis is also crisscrossed by religious and nature trails that lead to small country churches, botanical glimpses, and hermitages hidden among the hilly vegetation. An area to explore on foot, at a slow pace, following the paths of silence and spirituality. But this village does not only tell the story of the Middle Ages: in Attimis there is also one of the symbolic places of Italian partisan history, the national monument of Porzûs huts, the scene of the 1945 massacre. The place invites one to reflection and remembrance while immersed in a natural setting of great beauty. The landscape of Attimis is not only history, but also a generous land of vines and flavors. The eastern hills of Friuli are known for excellent wine production, and here too it is possible to taste excellent local wines in small family-run wineries or during events dedicated to Friulian food and wine. Among the rows of vines, among streams and rocks, labels are produced that tell the agricultural and cultural identity of the area.
