The first crackdown on aggressive telemarketing and fake calls from abroad will start on Tuesday, August 19th. Telephone operators will be compelled to prohibit commercial calls from outside Italy that are disguised as Italian landline numbers, a common activity thanks to the CLI Spoofing technique. This method hides the caller's identity by showing a different number than the actual one, deceiving the user into answering. The restriction, imposed by Agcom through new anti-spoofing filters, will be applied in two stages: from August 19th, the ban will apply to landline numbers, and starting November 19th, it will also apply to mobile numbers. Exceptions will remain in place for people who are genuinely traveling abroad. According to Assoutenti, this is an essential first step, but not a complete answer, in combating misleading calls that have targeted millions of people in recent years. Operators who fail to follow the new standards may face fines of up to one million euros.
