Two counterfeit Pablo Picasso prints were confiscated after being sold at a Stuttgart auction house, and two more were seized before delivery. Authorities suspect that an Italian citizen, who is presumed to be a professional art restorer, has "marketed" forgeries of works from Picasso's Suite Vollard series - a collection of 100 etchings created in the 1930s by the Andalusian master - over the course of several years. The discoveries are part of Italian police's international "Minotauro bis" investigation against market forgeries. The operation began in 2022 and resulted in the seizure of 104 fake contemporary artworks. On July 3, this year, officials from the Cultural Heritage Protection Unit dismantled a laboratory in Rome's Tuscolano area where counterfeit works by Picasso, Edvard Munch, and Paul Klee were allegedly manufactured, sold as originals, and exported abroad, notably to the United States.
