A 42-year-old Roman tourist, Marco Zampilli, lost his life yesterday in Lower Salento, while riding his motorcycle along State Highway 275 between Nociglia and Surano. According to reconstruction, the man was traveling alone on his BMW Enduro, completing a solo tour of Puglia. During a violent thunderstorm, lightning struck him, knocking him off the bike and causing his death on the spot. Carabinieri and 118 medical personnel were on the scene, but they could only note the tragedy. Some bystanders witnessed the scene and attempted to render aid. The accident occurred near a plaque commemorating another death that occurred in a similar manner many years ago, highlighting the dangerous nature of that stretch in thunderstorms.
