Valeria Sollai, 62, died overnight at the Monserrato Polyclinic, becoming the second fatality of botulism poisoning linked to the Fiesta Latina in late July. The woman had been in intensive care for about twenty days after consuming guacamole at an event in Monserrato, Cagliari's metropolitan area. An autopsy has been scheduled to ascertain the cause of death. Roberta Pitzalis, 36, also died on August 8th, having contracted the fatal bacteria while eating at the same kiosk. Christian Gustavo Vincenti, the owner and sole suspect in the case, is seeing his situation worsening. Sollai's son, Alessandro Aru, had begun a social media campaign shortly after his mother's hospitalization, warning people to be aware of street food and to notify doctors as soon as they noticed symptoms such as double vision, difficulty swallowing, and difficulty speaking. A 14-year-old girl remains hospitalized in the Policlinico, while four patients have been discharged from Cagliari's Brotzu Hospital. An 11-year-old child who was sent to the Gemelli Hospital in Rome is showing indications of improvement, albeit the recovery process will be lengthy, doctors indicate.
