Gas demand in Italy is rising faster than the European average. The volume of liquefied natural gas arriving from the United States is also increasing, now accounting for 45% of Italy's imports. Between January and July 2025, Italian gas demand exceeded 37 billion cubic meters, an increase of 5% year on year, driven primarily by the residential sector (+3%) due to slightly colder weather and thermoelectric generation (+8%), which is required to supplement renewables' non-schedulable contribution. Europe, by contrast, totaled 171 billion cubic meters, with an increase of 3%. To meet the rise in demand, Italy responded both with higher imports and, to a lesser extent, with domestic production, feeding an additional 1.6 billion cubic meters into the grid and channeling as much as 41% more liquefied natural gas compared to the same period in 2024.
