On August 19, the cultural world was struck by tragedy when Giovanna Maria Giomarino, a tour guide at the Colosseum, passed away due to a sudden illness while carrying out her work. Despite the prompt intervention of colleagues from the Archaeological Park, nothing could be done for her. The CGIL union conveyed its heartfelt condolences for her passing and stressed the urgent need to address working conditions in the cultural sector. "This is yet another name added to the already extensive list of workplace fatalities. It is critical to continue monitoring working conditions and boosting safety and productivity in the sector", the union stated in a statement. The decision to reopen the monument promptly following the tragedy was given particular consideration. The CGIL union condemned the decision, stating that, while it understands the arrangement of guided tours, condolences should have prevailed. Tourism Minister Daniela Santanchè sent her condolences to the guide's family, friends, and colleagues, highlighting the dedication of those who labor to promote Italy's cultural heritage. "We must ensure a safe and respectful working environment for those, like Giovanna, who dedicate their lives to our history and culture," declared the minister.
