In 2023, EU citizens lived on average 63.1 years of their lives in good health: 63.3 years for women and 62.8 years for men. This is according to Eurostat data, which are even more significant when compared to the average life expectancy at birth in the same year, which was 81.4 years. Women live an average of 5.3 years longer than men (84.0 years versus 78.7 years). The years lived in good health—that is, without activity limitations—thus represent 75% and 80% of total life expectancy for women and men, respectively. At the national level, Malta had the maximum number of healthy life years (71.4 years) in 2023, followed by Italy (69.1 years) and Bulgaria (68.6 years). Lithuania (52.7 years), Denmark (56.3), and Finland (57.1) had the lowest numbers. The average life expectancy at birth in those same countries was as follows: 83.4 in Malta, 83.5 in Italy, 83.4 in Sweden, 75.6 in Lithuania, 81.8 in Denmark, and 81.6 in Finland.
