Fishing netting are among the deadliest forms of marine litter, and they are frequently lost at sea. This is a concern for fishermen and a risk to the sea. To counter this widespread phenomenon in the Mediterranean, a European Union–funded project is also being developed in Italy, combining cutting-edge technologies with cooperation between fishermen, scientists, entrepreneurs, and local authorities. Special acoustic tags are put to the nets and tracked using GPS. Once the missing nets have been found, recovery activities begin, led by the fishermen. This closes the loop on marine litter, and fishermen take on an essential responsibility as sea protectors. The system is being developed from Sicily to Croatia, from Spain to Portugal, and from Malta to the United Kingdom, with the goal of creating pilot solutions that can be scaled up in the future.
