Two more victims linked to the West Nile virus are reported in Lazio. The first is an 84-year-old man from Latina, who was admitted to Santa Maria Goretti Hospital and died on August 10: only after his death did tests confirm he was positive for the virus. The second is an 87-year-old woman from Cassino, suffering from multiple conditions, who arrived in the emergency room on August 17 and died last night. With these cases, deaths in the region rise to 12. According to the latest update from Spallanzani's Virology Laboratory, eight new infections have been detected: two with neurological syndrome, five with West Nile fever, and one asymptomatic donor, discovered through checks by the Regional Blood Center. The new cases are concentrated in Cassino, Latina, Gaeta and Norma. As of early 2025, there are 182 confirmed West Nile virus positives in Lazio: the bulk, 160, in the ASL of Latina; 11 in the ASL of Rome 6; six in the ASL of Frosinone; one in the ASL of Rome 3; three outside the region, between Caserta and Isernia; and one last in progress.
