Scenes of panic Wednesday morning at Malpensa Airport, where a man set fire to a wastebasket near the check-in area of Terminal 1, near gate 13. The flames and thick black smoke immediately caused a stampede of passengers, captured in several videos shared on social media. The perpetrator of the fire, a Malian citizen with no criminal record, was promptly apprehended by the PolAria guards and security personnel. He could be arrested for criminal damage. Before setting the fire, the man had hammered a check-in station to smithereens. Firefighters temporarily evacuated the area to ensure safety, but shortly afterward operations resumed normally and the airport continued to operate without further disruption.
