Italian police have arrested a Ukrainian citizen in San Clemente, near Rimini, on suspicion of involvement in the sabotage of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines in September 2022. The man, identified as Serhii K., 49, was on vacation with his family when he was arrested under a European arrest warrant issued by the German judiciary. According to the German Federal Prosecutor's Office, the suspect is part of a group that, two years ago, allegedly placed explosive devices near the Danish island of Bornholm, causing serious damage to energy infrastructure. The charges against him include ‘collective explosion’, ‘unconstitutional sabotage’ and ‘destruction of buildings’. Investigations have revealed that the explosives were transported aboard a yacht chartered in Rostock using false documents. The explosions on September 26, 2022, affected both Nord Stream 1, the main channel for Russian gas supplies to Germany until Moscow halted deliveries, and Nord Stream 2, which never became operational because it was blocked by Berlin after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The incident exacerbated already high tensions on the energy front, with Europe committed to reducing its dependence on Moscow. Russia accused the United States, which has always denied involvement. In 2023, German media reported on a pro-Ukrainian group, but Kiev rejected any involvement. Serhii K. will now be transferred to Germany to appear before the investigating judge of the Federal Court of Justice.
