Trentino architect Mauro Marinelli has been awarded the 2025 Wheelwright Prize, an international award sponsored by Harvard University's Graduate School of Design. The yearly award provides a $100,000 grant to a project that investigates creative approaches to contemporary architecture from a global viewpoint. Marinelli's proposed project, "Topographies of Resistance: Architecture and the Survival of Cultures," focuses on rural mountain regions, particularly those in the Alps, Andes, and Himalayas, which are currently dealing with depopulation, climate change, infrastructure loss, and the erosion of local culture. Through the analysis of various geographical contexts, the research aims to identify solutions that enhance local identity, encourage autonomy, and promote cultural and environmental sustainability. Marinelli will use the funds to travel for two years across the mountains of Europe, South America, and Asia, performing site inspections, analysis, and direct experimentation with local communities.
