Italian-Venezuelans Amerigo De Grazia and Margarita Assenza, arrested on August 7 and October 2, 2024, respectively, have been released in Caracas. The news was released by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which in a statement emphasized the role played by Italian institutions “at the instigation of Minister Antonio Tajani and the government”. De Grazia, a former opposition deputy, was being held in solitary confinement in Helicoide, the Venezuelan intelligence services' prison. The Italian Embassy had repeatedly drawn the attention of the local authorities to his health condition, requesting specialist care. Assenza, on the other hand, worked with the Mayor of Maracaibo, Rafael Ramirez, and was arrested with him on charges of crimes against State property. Although released, the two will have to appear in court on Monday to clarify their position in the trial. Both remain under a ban on leaving Caracas, while other detainees have been granted house arrest.
