The Pope received Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke, a leading figure in the American “traditionalist” movement, who has not had an easy relationship with the Vatican during Pope Francis' pontificate. The subject of the meeting and the conversation is being kept strictly confidential. The cardinal, after leaving the meeting with Leo XIV, refused to comment on the matter, as did the Vatican spokesman. But we are waiting to find out more. Cardinal Burke, on the other hand, has never been reticent in making his ideas and considerations known, even when they are in stark contrast to official positions or go against the grain. Although former Cardinal Prevost and Burke have often found themselves on different sides of many issues, since the beginning of Leo XIV's pontificate, it has been clear that the intention will be to avoid confrontation and instead promote dialogue and collaboration, especially on key issues such as the cessation of conflicts, particularly in Ukraine and Gaza. Burke expressed his appreciation and great confidence in the new Pontiff, who, for his part, wrote a warm and detailed letter to the cardinal in June, thanking the US cardinal for his 50 years of priestly ministry, in a gesture that marks a significant change of tone after years of tension between Burke and Pope Francis.
