The Ocean Viking ship belonging to SOS Méditerranée has reported being attacked in international waters by the Libyan Coast Guard, which allegedly fired numerous shots at the vessel immediately after a rescue operation. There were 87 shipwrecked people and the crew on board, all unharmed according to the NGO, which released images of the bullet casings and damaged windows. The incident occurred after the rescue of 47 people from a rubber dinghy in distress, including nine unaccompanied minors. The Ocean Viking was heading for Marina di Carrara, a port designated by the Italian authorities more than 1,300 kilometers away from the rescue area. The organization contested the choice, calling it an obstacle to activities in the Mediterranean. Solidarity with the crew came from Sea Watch, which asked the Italian government to stop funding the Libyan Coast Guard, described as “a dangerous militia”. Meanwhile, another incident has fueled the debate: the Mediterranea Saving Humans ship disregarded the Interior Ministry's instructions by disembarking ten migrants rescued at sea in Trapani instead of Genoa. “Dignity and human life come first”, said President Laura Marmorale, recalling the torture and violence suffered by many of the shipwrecked migrants during their stay in Libya.
