Days prior to the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, which is scheduled to take place from August 27 to September 6, the Venice4Palestine (V4P) collective requested that Gal Gadot and Gerard Butler, as well as any artist who publicly supports the conflict in Gaza, be excluded from the festival. According to news agencies, however, the participation of the two actors in Julian Schnabel’s film In the Hand of Dante, screened out of competition, had never been confirmed. Gadot and Butler will consequently not be present at the Lido, and their absence is not due to collective pressure. On August 22, the Propal group addressed a letter to the Biennale, collecting over 1,500 signatures in just a few days, condemning the current massacre in Gaza as well as Israeli actions in Palestine. Signatories include Marco Bellocchio, Laura Morante, Abel Ferrara, Alba and Alice Rohrwacher, Toni and Peppe Servillo, Matteo Garrone, Valeria Golino, and Fiorella Mannoia, as well as festivals, film clubs, unions, and cultural associations.
