The number of new data centers in Italy is quickly increasing, driven by cloud computing and artificial intelligence-based applications. There are 342 new requests for connection to the electricity grid, totaling 55 gigawatts: a significant increase over last year (when the figure stood at 31.2 GW) and, most importantly, an enormous improvement from the numbers recorded between 2019 and 2021, when requests barely reached one gigawatt before exceeding 5 GW in 2023. Lombardy has received the most requests, with 210 for 30.2 gigawatts, the majority of which are in Milan, followed by Piedmont, Lazio, and Emilia-Romagna. In just five months, requests have risen by 15 gigawatts.
