The latest Istat report on road accidents in 2024 brings bad news for Italy. The culprits: one of the oldest car fleets in Europe, dangerous roads, smartphone distractions, and erratic driving habits. This resulted in a total of 173,364 accidents, up 4.1% from 2023. Injuries also increased (+4.1%), totaling 233,853. The number of fatalities remained relatively consistent at 3,030, with only 9 (0.3%) fewer than the previous year. This statistic is much lower than the EU27 average, which saw a 2.2% decline in fatalities. Car fatalities reduced by 6% over the previous year. Fatal accidents increased among motorcyclists (+13.1%), truck drivers (+30.4%), and e-scooter users (+14.3%). In contrast to the national mortality rate of 5.1 per 100,000 inhabitants, 13 regions surpass it, beginning with Umbria and Sardinia (both at 7.2) and Trentino (7). In this context, the mayor can have a significant impact on city outcomes; for instance, in Bologna, the death rate has been cut in half due to the implementation of a 30-kilometer-per-hour speed restriction.
