The book “E pace sia! Parole alla Chiesa e al mondo” (Let There Be Peace! Words to the Church and the World) (Libreria Editrice Vaticana, 160 pages, €15) is now available. The book is a collection of Pope Leo XIV's first speeches, published in Italian, English, and Spanish. Since his arrival on the world stage, the Pontiff has called for an “unarmed and disarming” peace, echoing the words of Christian de Chergé, the Prior of Tibhirine. His election on May 8 coincided with the liturgical memorial of the martyrs of Algeria. In his initial speeches, the Pope, a native of North America, indicated some priorities: the primacy of God, ecclesial communion, and commitment to peace. He reiterated the importance, for those who exercise a ministry of authority, of “making oneself small so that Christ may remain” and expressed his desire for a united Church, capable of becoming a leaven of reconciliation in the world. His appeals are not only addressed to politics, but to the daily life of each person: “Peace comes from how we look at others, how we listen to them, how we talk about them”.
