“Offline clubs”, or venues and events where smartphones are banned and the digital experience gives way to the fully human one, are also multiplying in Italy. Founded by a startup based in the Netherlands, the Offline Club initiative proposed its first event in February 2024, in Amsterdam, and since then its popularity has exploded, spreading to large cities such as Milan, Berlin, London, Paris, and Barcelona, and collecting more than half a million followers on its official channels. Offline Club meetings are events organized with the aim of disconnecting from technology and reconnecting with real people, in order to find genuine conversation now lost. The goal is to connect with other people without digital mediation, reducing performance anxiety. Among the others, there are "offline" dinners, or evenings of reading, dedicated to art or meditation. In short, any time of gathering as long as the cell phone remains off.
