La Sapienza di Roma is confirmed for the fourth consecutive year at the top of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), published by the independent organization Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, placing it as the first and only Italian university in the 101-150 range. ARWU considers the world's top 1,000 universities out of more than 2,500 surveyed and an estimated 18,000 worldwide. The evaluation parameters are the Nobel Prizes and Fields medals of former students or researchers at the individual university, the number of highly cited researchers according to Clarivate Analytics, publications in Nature and Science, and citations of techno-social publications. Globally, the top spot in the ranking has been occupied by Harvard University for 23 years, while Stanford University and MIT hold the second and third positions, respectively. For Sapienza, it was a happy year: the QS agency's rankings by subject areas, published on March 12, 2025, again placed the Roman university in 1st place globally in Classics & Ancient History.
