Benedetta Pilato and Chiara Tarantino, two Italian swimmers, were stopped at Singapore's airport on suspicion of stealing following the World Swimming Championships and a holiday to Bali. According to reports, Tarantino was caught on camera stuffing items in Pilato's luggage. The two athletes were held by police for several hours until the Italian Embassy intervened. They were eventually allowed to return to Italy with just a warning. "I never intended to commit inappropriate acts", Pilato added, referring to an incident that hurt her personally but from which she claims she learnt valuable lessons. The Italian Swimming Federation emphasized that the incident did not occur during federal activities; however, it condemned the incident and retains the right to evaluate potential actions. "A gross error that harms the sport", commented technical director Cesare Butini.
