The Florence Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into the cube-shaped building built on the site of the former Municipal Theater, which has sparked debate and controversy in the city for days due to its aesthetic contrast with the rest of the historic center (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Currently, no suspects are being investigated; the prosecutors' goal is to determine whether the building, which will house 150 luxury tourist apartments managed by the Starhotels group (complete with concierge, solarium terrace, gym, wellness center, and restaurants), was built in violation of building or planning codes. The building's black and white, metal-finished facade stands out from the surrounding structures, transforming the pastel-colored Renaissance skyline with the typical “eyesore” effect. The Times, reporting the news of the “black cube", wrote clearly: “A matter that could lead Florence to lose its status as a UNESCO World Heritage city, earned in 1982".
