With the start of the new school year, various changes are on the way for Italian students, including a ban on cell phones in schools, a greater emphasis on behavior grades, changes to the high-school final exam, and curriculum updates. One of the most anticipated modifications is the prohibition of mobile phone use during school hours, which has been extended to high schools by a circular signed by Minister Giuseppe Valditara. Exceptions are only made for students with disabilities or certain learning problems, as well as those enrolled in technology courses. Computers, tablets, and digital whiteboards, however, are still authorized. The goal is clear: to improve concentration and academic performance while protecting teenagers' health and well-being. Scientific data confirms the need for this measure: according to the OECD, in 2024 excessive technology use negatively affects school performance, while the National Health Institute reports problematic smartphone use among 25% of Italian adolescents. Some schools will also ban smartwatches.
