Technical Director Antonio La Torre has called up 90 Italian athletes (44 men and 46 women) for the IAAF World Athletics Championships, the highlight of the post-Olympic season, which will take place in Tokyo from Saturday, September 13th to Sunday, September 21st. This is the greatest total number of participants for Italy at the World Championships thus far; the previous record was set in Budapest in 2023 with 78. The team also includes the three medalists from the recent Paris 2024 Games: the 10,000-meter silver Nadia Battocletti and bronzes Mattia Furlani (long jump) and Andy Diaz Hernandez (triple jump), both winners of gold at the last World Indoor Championships. Gianmarco Tamberi, the reigning world champion and Tokyo Olympic champion in the high jump, has been automatically registered as part of a team that also includes Marcell Jacobs (100 meters and 4x100 meters), filippo Tortu, Lorenzo Patta, Fausto Desalu (4x100 meters), and Antonella Palmisano (20 km walk). "This is the largest Italian team ever at the World Championships", said FIDAL President Stefano Mei. "That is significant. For Gianmarco Tamberi, the reigning champion of the high jump, he requested and was granted an additional few days to undergo technical evaluation tests before determining whether to depart. He is resolute in his commitment to compete for the Italian national team if he is confident in his ability to do so".
