Generali has signed a three-year agreement with the Italian Bishops’ Conference (CEI) to provide catastrophe insurance for more than 25,000 parishes across Italy. The deal, formalized in Rome by CEI president Cardinal Matteo Zuppi and Generali Italia CEO Giancarlo Fancel, introduces a modern form of protection: parametric insurance. Unlike traditional coverage, these policies pay out automatically when specific thresholds are met—such as a measured earthquake magnitude or rainfall level—eliminating the need for lengthy inspections and accelerating compensation. The model is designed to support parishes in the country’s 226 dioceses against earthquakes, floods, and severe storms, hazards that have increasingly damaged churches, parish facilities, and clergy residences. Cardinal Zuppi called the partnership “a virtuous model of collaboration,” stressing its role in strengthening social cohesion, ecological transition, and modernization efforts. Fancel added that Generali’s dedicated Religious and Nonprofit unit made the deal possible, enabling the insurer to “bring experience and innovative tools to the country in response to ongoing environmental and social change.” The program continues a tradition once overseen by Cattolica Assicurazioni—now part of the Generali group—but with faster, more efficient coverage tailored to today’s climate challenges.
