In the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV received the President of the State of Israel, Isaac Herzog, who subsequently conferred with Secretary of State Pietro Parolin. During the discussions, the political and socioeconomic situation in the Middle East was discussed, with special emphasis on the tragic situation in Gaza. A prompt resumption of negotiations was hoped for, so that — with openness and courageous decisions, as well as with the support of the international community — the release of all hostages could be achieved, an urgent permanent cease-fire reached, the safe entry of humanitarian aid into the most affected areas, and the full respect for humanitarian law, as well as the legitimate aspirations of both peoples. The discussions also centered on ways to ensure a future for the Palestinian people, as well as regional peace and stability; the Holy See emphasized the importance of a two-state solution as the only way out of the current conflict. Additionally, the significance of the City of Jerusalem and the occurrences in the West Bank were discussed. In the subsequent discussions, the historic significance of the relationship between the Holy See and Israel was acknowledged, and certain matters concerning the relationship between the state authorities and the local Church were also addressed. The significance of the Christian communities and their dedication to human and social development, particularly in the areas of education, social cohesion, and stability in the Middle East, were particularly highlighted.
