Webuild, an Italian company that was previously known as Salini-Impregilo, has constructed the largest dam in Africa, which is quite possibly the most remarkable engineering achievement to have been accomplished since the fall of colonialism. The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam has a hydropower capacity of 5,150 megawatts, which is comparable to five nuclear reactors. Located in northern Ethiopia, it has become the continent's primary source of clean energy. The dam, costing $5 billion, was built with widespread participation from the Ethiopian people, and "It's my dam" is one of the most popular slogans in Ethiopia among individuals who have bought government bonds. Webuild has offered employment and expertise to more than 20,000 African laborers. This provides excellent development potential for the continent's second most populous country, where 43% of the population lacks access to power and, according to the World Bank, 100 million people will flee by 2050 owing to poverty and drought. The dam, which was opened on September 9th, is at the center of a geopolitical debate. Egypt claims the project poses an "existential threat" by diverting water from its land. Ethiopia disputes these claims, underlining the benefits to the entire area.
