The recent apple harvest in Trentino's Non and Sole valleys marks the premiere of a "technological marvel". Freshly picked apples can now be transported by cable car: the futuristic cableway system, designed by Melinda to connect a processing facility with underground cells in the heart of the Rio Maggiore mine—900 meters from the mine entrance and about 575 meters above sea level—has completed its first journey. This investment is a complementary measure to the use of vacant quarries to store the harvested goods. This project is the world's first cable system dedicated to fruit transportation. A 100% Made in Italy initiative created by the Melinda Consortium in partnership with the Leitner Group, a global leader in cableway systems. The cable car, which is 1.3 kilometers in length and has a vertical descent of nearly 90 meters, is capable of transporting 460 300-kilogram containers per hour at a speed of 5m/s. The apples will then be transported to subterranean storage facilities in the heart of the Dolomites, where natural cold storage results in a 30% energy reduction over traditional warehouses. This infrastructure will save approximately 5,000 truck trips every year.
