According to the EU Asylum Agency, the number of asylum applications in Europe decreased by 23% in the first half of 2025, with a total of 399,000 applications. This decline was attributed to the significant decrease in the number of Syrians seeking protection. While the number of applications in France remained constant, applications in Germany (-43%), Italy (-25%), and Spain (-13%) fell compared to the first half of 2024. The communities in Italy that are experiencing the most growth are Bangladeshi and Pakistani. 74% of asylum requests from Bangladeshi citizens in the EU were filed in Italy, as were 52% of those from Pakistan. There was also a large influx of people from Morocco and Nigeria. Italy received a total of 64,000 asylum requests. At the European level, Venezuela has become the leading nation of origin in terms of applications, with approximately 100,000. Over 90% of Venezuelans arriving in Europe in 2025 filed applications in Spain.
