After a Mediterranean cyclone hit the Italian peninsula, harsh weather ravaged most of the country. Lombardy and Tuscany are among the severely devastated regions. On the Milan-Lecco railway line, firefighters narrowly avoided a catastrophe by stopping a train just meters from a sinkhole that had been created by a downpour near the Bulciago train station (Lecco), one of the areas that was most severely affected by the severe storm in recent hours. Torrential rains in Tuscany triggered a landslide that has resulted in the isolation of at least 200 individuals in the municipality of Forno on the island of Elba. Among them are some tourists. Severe weather warnings are also in place for eastern Veneto, Umbria, Friuli Venezia Giulia, and Lazio.
