Remains of a Venetian warship that was lost in 1509 are located in the waters of Lake Garda, between Lazise and Sirmione. The sinking of several vessels had been ordered by the Venetian Senate as an act of self-defense after a lost war. The wreck is situated on a marshy seabed at a depth of 24 to 27 meters, which is approximately 500 meters from the modern port of Lazise. The hull has been restored to a length of just under thirty meters and a width of three and a half metres. While the sinking of the ships in Lake Garda is not a particularly significant historical event, it is an exceptional event for naval archaeology due to the muddy lakebed at that point, the cold and dark environment, and the resulting low biological activity have preserved a portion of the hull of a Renaissance warship in good condition. On September 8, a protection campaign for the wreck began, involving archaeologists, chemists, and other specialists.
