"The primary objective of any Coast Guard is to ensure the safety and protection of the sea from all angles. This includes the safety and protection of the traffic that concerns our ports, as well as the security and protection of the energy infrastructure that is critical to our economic and productive systems. However, it also entails the suppression of the numerous forms of illegality that exist in the maritime sector". This was declared by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, speaking at the Coast Guard Global Summit 2025 in Rome. Meloni went on to say, "One of these is clearly migrant trafficking, one of the most profitable criminal activities in the world, which according to UN reports has equaled drug trafficking in terms of turnover and has already surpassed arms trafficking. This is an intolerable contemporary form of slavery that resulted in the fatalities of more than 9,000 individuals along migratory routes in 2024. This Government is committed to combating this issue with all available resources. Because faced with these numbers we have only one choice: resign ourselves or act".
