"The gift you have received is not for yourselves, but to serve the cause of the Gospel". Leo XIV delivered these words to the newly appointed bishops he met in audience this morning. After underlining that the bishop is a "servant" and is called "to serve the faith of the people", the pontiff stated, "You have been selected and called to be sent, as apostles of the Lord and servants of the faith. This pertains to our identity. Service is not an external trait or set of actions. However, "on the contrary, those whom Jesus calls as disciples and heralds of the Gospel, particularly the Twelve, are required to possess inner freedom, poverty of spirit, and a willingness to serve born of love in order to exemplify the same choice as Jesus, who became poor to enrich us. He has demonstrated the path of God, who does not reveal himself to us through power, but rather through the love of a Father who invites us to communion with Him". According to the Pope, "whoever desires to be great among you will be your servant, and whoever desires to be first among you will be the slave of all". After reading the address, the pontiff conversed with the prelates who participated in a training course that concluded yesterday in the New Synod Hall, behind closed doors.
