It was the summer of 2023 when the news spread: Taylor Swift has Italian roots, specifically from Castelnuovo Cilento, a town in the province of Salerno, in Campania. Since then, the residents of the small town have remained hopeful that the world-famous music star will come visit her roots. Meanwhile, the Cilento town has named a street after Carmine Antonio Baldi, ancestor of the singer who has sold over 200 million records worldwide. Some descendants of the Baldi family witnessed the ceremony, returning to their hometown and representing a tribute to the stories of emigration that have intertwined Cilento with the Italian-American community. Carmine Antonio Baldi departed Castelnuovo in 1876 for Philadelphia. Within a few years, he had established himself as a successful entrepreneur, founding the daily L'Opinione in 1906, which served as a source of information for Italians in the United States. The investigation of Giuseppe Galzerano, a publisher and scholar from Castelnuovo Cilento, enabled the genealogical reconstruction that connected Baldi to Taylor Swift. According to the documents he found, Taylor Swift’s direct ancestors, Vito Baldi and Rosa Galzerano, were born in Castelnuovo in 1836 and 1842, respectively.
