In Italian courts, labor lawsuits are on the rise. Last year, there were 314,288, an 11.7% increase from 2023. However, the upward tendency had already been obvious in the preceding two years (+6.7% in 2023 and +14.3% in 2022). The increase was apparent in appeals against dismissals in the private sector (+32.54%), but particularly in disputes initiated in the public sector, which totaled 77,941 last year, up 37.5% year on year and quadrupling from 19,900 five years earlier. Social security (pension entitlement and amount) accounts for the majority of litigation, and the majority of disputes involving public employment happen in schools. In municipalities, many precarious workers are asking for their part-time contracts to be extended to full-time. Finally, there is litigation involving local government-owned firms that administer a wide range of services, from nursery schools to transportation: there are various lawsuits requesting that the judge recognize the right to stable employment.
