A day to celebrate the art of our time. On October 4th, Italy will celebrate the twenty-first edition of the Giornata del Contemporaneo (Contemporary Art Day), an annual event organized by the Association of Italian Contemporary Art Museums (AMACI) with the support of the Ministry of Culture and in conjunction with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. For the twenty-first year in a row, the 26 museums affiliated with AMACI, as well as approximately one thousand public and private institutions throughout Italy, will be open to the public free of charge. A special program of exhibitions, events, workshops, and initiatives, both in person and online, will be organized to introduce contemporary art to a broader and more diverse audience. As in previous years, this year's Giornata del Contemporaneo goes beyond national borders, extending until October 10th with the project 'Giornata del Contemporaneo | Italian Contemporary Art', created in collaboration with the Farnesina's diplomatic and consular network—Embassies, Consulates, and Italian Cultural Institutes—to promote and showcase Italian contemporary art worldwide. The 2025 edition's central focus is education, defined as a comprehensive and multifaceted process that includes instruction, investigation, and the exchange of experiences and information. The tradition of entrusting a prominent artist with the creation of the event's guiding image, which dates back to 2006, continues: the 2025 edition features the Atelier dell'Errore collective, which created 'Unknown Pleasures - The Shelter' for the occasion: an emotional and poetic installation inspired by the sail of Pier Paolo Pasolini's boat in "Oedipus Rex". Reimagined with 50 emergency blankets, the sail transforms into a safe haven for protecting and embracing one's emotional desires. It is a powerful gesture that demonstrates how art may be used to promote healing, community, and inner liberation.
