Due to alleged 'Ndrangheta influence, the Catanzaro court has placed the Crotone soccer team (now playing in Serie C) under special administration for one year. The police were able to conclude that the club's management was influenced by the 'Ndrangheta as a result of the evidence they obtained during the investigation, which was partially influenced by the testimony of multiple informants. Individuals tied to organized crime allegedly had a significant influence over stadium security and access. The same inquiry resulted in 17 suspensions from athletic events. Crotone currently plays in Serie C, but has competed in Serie A three times in the last 10 years: 2016-2017, 2017-2018, and 2020-2021. The club’s president is businessman Gianni Vrenna.
