The Italian government is close to reaching an agreement with Amazon, for which the Italian Revenue Agency sought €3 billion in unpaid taxes on internet distance selling. According to Corriere della Sera, the deal calls for a €600 million payment, which represents a huge savings for Bezos' company. "It can be viewed," the reporter says, "as a gigantic favor granted by the Meloni government to one of the American big tech companies favored by President Trump." The inquiry, which targets Amazon as a legal entity as well as three high-level officials from its US parent company, is centered on an attempt to evade VAT. Jeff Bezos' company, in particular, reportedly neglected to divulge the identity and contact information of its suppliers, which is required for non-European counterparts to pay the 22% VAT.
