Gigio Donnarumma has once again been crowned the world’s best goalkeeper. In Paris, at the Ballon d’Or ceremony, the former AC Milan star received the Yashin Trophy for the second time in his career, following his 2021 win. The award carries a sense of vindication: Donnarumma was honored in the very city where he triumphed with PSG before being sidelined by coach Luis Enrique. Now with Manchester City, the Italian goalkeeper beat out Alisson, Courtois, Bounou, and Sommer. The trophy was presented by Gigi Buffon, symbolizing a passing of the torch between two Italian legends. “I’m honored to receive this award,” Donnarumma said. “The incredible results came thanks to my teammates—it’s because of them I’m here tonight.” pointedly omitting any mention of his former coach. Looking ahead, he added: “I’m focused on my new adventure. Thank you to Manchester City for this opportunity. I want to win trophies in England as well.” He closed with heartfelt words for his loved ones: “Thank you to my family. You’ve always been by my side, and it’s thanks to you that I’m here.”
