Emanuela Maccarani, the former technical director of the Italian national rhythmic gymnastics team, has been indicted on charges of mistreatment aggravated by the presence of minor. Silvia Pansini, the Monza preliminary hearing judge, issued her ruling today. The trial will start on February 10, 2026. In court, Maccarani described her professional life as "shattered": "I got fired and I lost everything I had created in 40 years. I'll wait for the trial to end before moving forward". Five former 'Butterflies' gymnasts—Alessia Maurelli, Agnese Duranti, Daniela Mogurean, Martina Santandrea, and Laura Paris—supported her in letters, asserting that they did not identify themselves as the injured parties and defending their former coach. This stance opposes that of other former gymnasts who have accused her of inappropriate behavior and abuse. Last June, Maccarani had already accepted a three-month suspension in a parallel sports proceeding for unsporting conduct, as part of a parallel proceeding opened after the Monza investigation.
