According to the most recent data from the Italian National Institute of Statistics, Italy is becoming a country of singles. Istat anticipates that in 25 years, 41% of households will be composed of a single individual. This shift in the organization of society—which can be attributed to a variety of factors, including increased life expectancy and increased instability in relationships—will have a substantial effect on consumption. Not only do single-person households spend less than houses with two or more people, but they also spend differently. As anticipated, product formats will be impacted by a substantial change. Larger sizes are set to decrease in favor of smaller ones. Single-portion foods, in particular, will become more prevalent. Shared spaces, such as laundries and gyms, are also expected to develop in many apartment complexes, particularly in cities. Another key factor is that in the next 25 years, the population over 65 will rise from 24% to 34.6%. Furthermore, the number of people over 65 living alone will increase from 4.6 to 6.5 million. This will encourage the creation of a collection of products and services that are specifically designed for them.
