Steve McCurry is one of the most well-known individuals in contemporary photography: an outstanding storyteller who employed photos to share and explore humanity's history, culture, and nature. From today, Steve McCurry can also be called Doctor of Anthropology. The University of Siena has conferred an honorary master's degree in "Anthropology and the Languages of the Image" to the American photographer, whose reportage encompasses a variety of disciplines, including street photography, war photography, urban photography, and portraiture. The awarding ceremony will take place on Wednesday, September 24, in the Aula Magna of the Rectorate of the University of Siena. It will serve as a preview to the Siena Awards Photo Festival, where in the following days Steve McCurry will be the awaited protagonist of the prestigious international photography festival, held in Siena and now in its 11th edition. Steve McCurry’s Lectio Magistralis promises to be both original and engaging. The acclaimed photographer will hold a conversation with Biba Giacchetti, founder of the Sudest57 Agency, collaborator, and personal friend. The title reads 'Life Behind the Lens. A Conversation among Friends About His Journey, Photography, and the Future'. Following that, the Rector will speak again to announce the graduate. Steve McCurry was born in Philadelphia in 1950 and graduated with a degree in Cinematography and Theater from the University of Pennsylvania before starting his career as a freelance photographer in the late 1970s, reporting from India and Afghanistan, two countries that have come to define his work.
