President Sergio Mattarella has signed four pardons, two of which concern cases that sparked wide public debate. Massimo Zen, a security guard sentenced to nine years and six months for killing Manuel Major, a carnival worker fleeing after a cash machine robbery, received a partial pardon reducing his remaining sentence to under four years. This opens the door to probation. The Quirinale took into account the favorable opinion of the Supervisory Judge, compensation to the victim’s family, and Zen’s health condition. Gabriele Finotello, sentenced to 14 years for killing his father in 2021 after years of domestic abuse, also benefited from clemency. His case had raised ethical questions and stirred national debate. Two women were also included in the decrees. Patrizia Attinà, convicted of theft and extortion, received clemency in light of the time elapsed, forgiveness from the victim, and her health conditions. Ancuta Strimbu, sentenced for extortion and drug-related crimes, will see her remaining sentence reduced to less than four years, making her eligible for probationary measures.
