Illegal gambling in Italy is expected to earn between €20 and €25 billion in revenue yearly, which equates to more than €3 billion in expenditure and nearly €2 billion in lost tax revenue. This is according to research conducted by the Gaming and Entertainment Association in Concession in collaboration with the Luiss Business School, which discovered that 14% of players who use illegal channels do so unknowingly, demonstrating the difficulty in distinguishing between authorized and unauthorized operators. Uninformed players are the most likely to use unlawful channels: more than 26% report having gambled illegally, more than triple the rate observed among other players. The motivations for utilizing illegal channels are diverse, ranging from the perceived simplicity of the platforms, the rapidity of payments, and the conviction that illegal gambling allows for greater profits. Furthermore, there are reasons relating to the gaming experience, such as considered more appealing graphics and a wider choice and quality of games. According to the same research, the regulated gaming industry plays an important role both economically and in terms of social and regulatory implications, constituting a significant component of the national economy in 2024: net spending reached 21 billion euros, while tax revenue surpassed 11 billion euros.
